READING RESPONSES

Reading Responses should be based upon selected required or optional reading assignments for that half of the course.  Some of these resources are folded into the syllabus.  Note that there are several other relevant supplemental sections of the web-site, though, including On-Line Articles, NIC Articles, and War And Memory In The News.

There is no one appropriate format for a Reading Response. For longer articles, I recommend that you write a well-focused commentary that combines summary and analysis.  What is the article's argument?  What are the author's assumptions?  What did you find most interesting about the reading, and how might you best respond to the ideas it contained?

For History In The News entries, I recommend that you use more than one article for your resource base.  You could just use two or more articles on the same topic, though another possibility is to engage in some comparative analysis in which you are pairing articles and imaginatively linking them together.
