DISCUSSION TOPIC: VIRTUAL ARCHIVES VISIT


The Mission

This exercise is designed to introduce you to some of the rich newspaper and photographic resources available on-line.  You may decide to push deeper into this material later in the semester, including for your final Connections Project.


A.  Newspapers

Step 1:  History In The News

Browse for several minutes in the course web-site History In The News and NIC Database News pages.  Find at least one story of interest.

Step 2:  Encountering Historic Newspapers

Browse for several minutes in one or more historic newspaper.  Try to find at least one items of interest.  Here are some relevant resources:

Alberni Advocate (1912-1915):  Early twenthieth-century Alberni newspapers are available through UBC's BC Historical Newspapers project.  Note that you can access different years by clicking on the relevant circles and that this is a searchable database.

Courtenay Weekly News (1892-1896):  Late nineteenth-century Courtenay newspapers are available through UBC's BC Historical Newspapers project.  Note that you can access different years by clicking on the relevant circles and that this is a searchable database.

Courtenay Review (1912-1918):  The World War I years are comprehensively covered in an archive available through UBC's BC Historical Newspapers project.  Note that you can access different years by clicking on the relevant circles and that this is a searchable database.

Cumberland News (1897-1915).  Note that you can access different years by clicking on the relevant circles and that this is a searchable database.

Cumberland Islander (1910-1931).  Note that you can access different years by clicking on the relevant circles and that this is a searchable database.

British Colonist (1858-1951):  This vast on-line database includes nearly a century of issues of the Victoria newspaper founded by Amor de Cosmos at the time of the Fraser Valley Gold Rush.

Daily British Columbian (1882-1890):  This newspaper was published in New Westminster by the Robson brothers.


B.  Photographs

Step 3:  Historic Photographs

Browse through some historic photographs.  Start with the BC Archives site and then see if any of the Local Photographers And Resources materials are of potential interest to you.

a)  BC Archives:  Digital Objects within the provincial archive collection can be browsed at  .  Photos from this vast repository can also be searched by term on this page.

b)  Local Photographers And Resources

Henry Twidle:  For a virtual exhibit, see A Moment In Time -- A Collection Of Henry Twidle's Photography.  Twidle lived on Quadra Island for four decades.

  Leonard Frank:  See Leonard Frank Collection -- Vancouver Public Library  .  Frank was based in Port Alberni for several years.  I recommend that you type in "Alberni" as a search term.

  City Of Port Alberni -- Historic Photograph Collection:  Historic images of Port Alberni are available here through the Alberni Valley Museum.

Museum At Campbell River:  A collection of photo galleries that feature historic images of Campbell River.

Cumberland Museum And Archives Photographs:  A wonderful on-line collection of historic images of Cumberland.

Walter Gage:  A Kye Bay farmer and logger who took several wonderful photographs of the Comox Valley at the beginning of the twentieth century.  The Gage photographs are featured in the book Watershed Moments and can also be accessed at the Courtenay Museum.
